Built between 1780 and 1783, Buscot Park and its gardens owned by the National Trust, is open to visitors. It is at once opulent and homely, with an easy itimacy often commented on by visitors. Over the years, generations have worked hard to restore the interior, furnishings and gardens to its late-eighteenth century appearance. The gardens and grounds are extensive, offering excitement and fun to visitors of all ages. Once a kitchen garden, the Four Seasons Walled Garden is a fine ornamental space which is at once both structured and playful in its informality. The garden has been segmented into four quadrants, featuring statues of the Four Seasons. Visit the Parents Walk to enjoy the double borders of year-round foliage colour and the Peto Water Garden, now more than a century old and conceived along the lines of formal Italianate garden design, where walkways and bridges run alongside and over a purpose-built canal. There are also a number of wooded walks to enjoy, with structured avenues running beneath tall trees. If there are any avid birders in your party, you might be interested to know that in a bird survey carried out in 2002, Buscot estate was found to have the second highest count of breeding birds in the UK, per kilometer square...that's sixty breeding species counted in one square kilometre. In fact there are over a hundred breeding species of bird across the Buscot estate, including Barn Owl, Kingfisher, Woodlark and Corn Bunting... so pack your binoculars!
