Visit Stafford's Ancient High House

A day in Stafford town itself will yield an interesting historical trail, with plenty to see and do for everyone in the family. Begin at Stafford's Ancient High House, the largest timber-framed town house in England and a fabulously well preserved example of Tudor architecture in the country. This iconic building now houses a museum providing a fascinating insight into the lives of the people who have inhabited the house over the centuries since it was built in 1595: wander about the period-sets in the bedroom, the Wallpeper Room, the Edwardian Shop and the Victorian Room. Two gallery spaces are given up to regional artists and a third to a changing history exhibition with many weird and interesting artifacts. From the Ancient High House continue your historical trail of Stafford City Centre by taking a left along St Mary's passge to visit the 1000 year old St Mary's Church and St Mary's School room opposite the church. Turn left into Church Lane where you'll find the Sheriff's Office before turning right towards the Almshouses built in 1660. From here you can continue to the Malthouse, the Town Mills and later to the Broadeye Windmill: the architecture of the city is visible on every street.

Visit Cheddleton Flint Mill

If you want to explore a traditional Peak District Village, then heading to Cheddleton is as good a place as any. The old part of the village is nestled around the 12th Century Church of St Edward at its centre and the whistle and whoosh of the local heritage steam railway line, the Churnett Way, can be frequently heard in the air. At Cheddleton you'll also find the Cheddleton Flint Mill, admission to which is free to visitors, including the parking. Set on the banks of the Caldon Canal, the mill consists of a complex of buildings once used to mill the flint used to make pottery: a miller's cottage, two flint kilns, a drying kiln and a number of outbuildings parts of which have been in existence since 1253. You can easily spend a few fascinating hours at the mill following the route of the flint from arrival by narrow boat, through the grinding, settling and drying processes. Visit Cannock Chase

If you need to burn off some energy whilst camping or touring in the Stafford area, then head for the beautiful Cannock Chase and explore this expanse of natural wilderness. Walk, run, cycle; explore heathland and forest. There are activities running on the Chase which are payable, of course, and the car parking will cost, but after that there's so much to do which is entirely free. If you want a gentle walk with some interesting things to see, opt for the 'Route to Health' Sculpture Trail, created by local artists, students and schools. You'll walk through the woodland around Birches Valley and discover a range of thought-provoking sculpture to stimulate the mind whilst the body is also having a work out! Pack your mountain bikes and use one of the purpose built trails through the forest. If you want to watch the wildlife then head to Chasewater Country Park where you can enjoy gentle scenic walks, a bike ride or some bird watching of the waterfowl that lock to the 63 hectares of water. And, after all that exercise if you still want something else to stimulate you (rather than heading back to your campsite to collapse!) you could always visit the Museum of Cannock Chase, general admission to which is free.
