Here you will find listings of the holiday parks, touring grounds and campsites near Midland Railway, running 3.5 miles between Hammersmith and Riddings, with stops at Butterley and Swanwick. Park at Butterley station (DE5 3QZ) where you will find refreshments a shop and two model railways to enjoy before boarding your steam train.

Midland Railway Centre



One of the great attractions of this particular UK steam railway is the 57 acre-wide railway museum situated at Midland Railway Butterley Station, a diligent and passion filled endeavour by hundreds of enthusiasts and organisations over decades to build a lasting reminder and celebration of the Midland Line that was so crucial to the region's economic growth throughout the nineteenth century. It makes a fascinating visit, with buildings shrouded in nostalgia having been moved brick by painstaking brick from other sites around the country. Don't miss the Matthew Kirtley Museum, with its outstanding display of locomotives and carriages dating from the 1960s. Operating next door in the adjoining country park is the not-to-be-missed Golden Valley Light Railway, a 2ft gauge line running for a mile. At Swanwick don't miss a demonstration signal box, diesel depot and fascinating workshops... this really is the heritage line to visit for those whose need for steam knows no bounds!
