Taking place in venues across this friendly sea-side town in South Cornwall, the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival, which falls each year across a weekend each June, is one of the largest maritime music festivals in Europe. You'll find hundreds of competitors, mainly from Cornwall, who have formed shanty groups with fabulous names like 'Thraw'd Together', 'Femmes de la Mer', and 'The Longest Johns'. Many of the shanties sung at the festival are traditional sea shanties, sung and resung down the Cornish generations; other shanties are contemporary twists on the traditional shanty style, incorporating modern themes and ideas. All are noisy, winsome and a lot of fun to listen to, foot-tap to, or join in on after a few pints of the local brew which also tend to flow copiously during the Sea Shanty Festival weekend. Be prepared - the Cornish like a drink as much as they like to sing! So, for those who like to make a local festival the centrepiece of their touring weekend or week away, throwing themselves headlong into the energy and pride of the local culture, we've brought together the Falmouth campsites closeby the town, ideal bases from which to enjoy the Sea Shanty Festival. Founded in 2003, this festival mightn't have ancient roots in itself, but the traditions of singing sea shanties stretch back hundreds of years into Cornwall's sea faring history. Each year the festival grows, raising considerable sums of money for the RNLI upon which fisher folk have long relied. The visitor can expect to experience the heritage and storytelling history of this vibrant area brought alive through the medium of song. So, get your feet tapping, your head nodding and hum away with a smile on your face - this is the largest free festival of maritime music on the planet and you won't forget it in a hurry!
