'Crazy' doesn't quite cover this most unusual of summer events, held each year at Promenade Park in Maldon...picture this, if you will...the crowds are gathering, with more than a smattering of press representatives from across Europe to witness the resolve of the 300 entrants of this eccentric (to say the least!) race. The entrants are raising money for charity doing something that very few of us would relish the idea of...although thousands like to watch it take place. Originating in 1973, the Maldon Mud Race has grown in size and popularity considerably, as hundreds of people seem keen each year to make the dash (or crawl...) through the mud of the river bank at low tide near Hythe Quay. If you decide that spectating at this unusual summer festival is an abolsute must for your touring calendar you will find the entrants dressed in all manner of crazy outfits and, of course, as the race developes an accumulation of thick, sticky, oozing mud. Yeerrcch! Smiling faces abound, though, amid a few grimaces, as the entrants bravely drag themselves through their muddy paces in front of a crowd of thousands lining the river bank. And who said the British were mad? And, because we suspect that you'd rather enjoy the spectacle of 300+ mad dogs and Englishmen, with a few loonies from European countries thrown in for good measure, ploughing their way through acres of river mud, here we've listed the camp sites nearby Maldon so that you can make a weekend break of the Maldon Mud Race festivities.
