UK National Sandcastle Competition

Roll jolly music from sea-side brass bandstands, roll ice-creams, sandy sandwiches, rolling surf, slightly sunburnt legs, roll buckets and spades, Punch and Judy shows, beach-side entertainment and you've got a fabulous day by the sea-side in many-a-town along the coast of the glorious British Isles. But -ah!- stop there. Because this is a beach with a difference... in fact it's a day with a difference. If you go down to the sea on this particular day towards the end of summer, to the sea that laps at the rich golden sands of Croyde Bay in North Devon, you'll find yourself in the midst of the UK National Sandcastle Competition. And here we have listed the camping sites within 5 miles of this popular event just in case you fancy joining in the fun and festivities that grip the town on this very special day.

Now in it's twentieth year, the UK National Sandcastle Competition held on Croyde Bay Beach each summer is primarily a charity fund-raising event, when hundreds of members of the public enroll and compete in teams against one another to create many wonderful sand sculptures and castles across the broad sands of one of North Devon's best loved beaches. The rules? Well, of course there are rules...you need to bring your own scultping tools for a start. Your team will be alloted a 7 square metre pitch of sand - and no more! You'll have 3 hours to start, build and complete your castle or sculpture if you are a corportate or business team (did we mention that people take this very seriously?) or 2.5 hours if you are entering as a family team. Your castle or sculpture can be pre-designed and plans can be brought with you to guide your creativity during the excitement! You can use decoration, but only natural materials or those found through beach-combing...but not the type of beach-combing where you steal stuff from another team's castle, you understand...No diggers, scaffolding or piling is allowed (well, some people get carried away, they really do). Oh, and, no live animals can be used in the construction (well, for goodness sake, obviously not...surely?)
