Attracting many kite-flyers and kite enthusiasts from across the globe, the Portsmouth Kite Festival is one of the best known international kite festivals and certainly one of the best-loved and best attended kite festivals in the UK. For those of you who haven't been to a major kite festival before, what can you expect? Well for a start, you'll soon realise that kite-flying is a serious business these days. Flying a kite might start in early child hood with a tangled mess around a holly bush at the end of your garden or local park, but when you arrive at the Southsea Kite Festival, it will soon become clear that you have entered a rather more professoinal world where elite international teams fly state of the art stunt kites in highly perfected formations and routines to the delight of the crowds below. And, because the reviews of this event is always fabulous, we've put together this list of the campsites within a few miles of Southsea Common where all the fun and games takes place, so that you can make a trip out to the Portsmouth Kite Festival one of the highlights of your camping or touring holiday in the Portsmouth area. The Portsmouth Kite Festival takes place across a weekend each August on Southsea Common between 10am and 5pm and it is free to enter. The air displays come thick and fast, all centred around a theme which changes each year to keep the teams entering and the kite designers on their toes. Some of the displays focus on the design of the kites themselves, when the skies are filled with the buffet and flap of multi-coloured canvas in a myriad of shapes and designs, many hanging like comets in the sky. Other displays include synchronished displays, stunt displays, battles between 'fighting' kites and sprint races between speed kites...all very exciting and great to watch from the comfort of a blanket spread with a picnic below! And the fun on the ground comes thick and fast too with kite traders, food stalls, craft shalls and entertainment. There are even kids' kite making workshops available on site.
