Swimming in the Upper Teign

There are many ideal swimming stretches of the River Teign as it winds its course across Dartmoor; Chagford makes a great base, with its quintessential Dartmoor appeal of granite cottages, bracken-clad moorland and vibrant pubs and restaurants. The outdoor, river-fed swimming pool at Chagford is a promising start for swimmers but you don’t have to walk far for the real deal: crystal clear water, dappled in diamonds of sunlight and teaming with minnows and baby rainbow trout.

From Chagford outdoor swimming pool walk 500 metres upstream along a public footpath towards Murchington to a 200 metre lazy stretch of river cushioned by sandy banks and bordered by fields. After a dip here, walk downstream towards Castle Drogo and swim the wooded weirs at Dogmarsh Bridge. Swimming in the Upper Teign is a laid-back affair!

Treat yourself to good food and a pint of the local brewage in the Chagford and Drewsteignton pubs. Perfick. Search these listings for camping on Dartmoor closeby this beautiful stretch of the River Teign.
