Campsites in Scotland - a year of #Homecoming

You may have noticed that 2014 is a bit of a big year for Scotland and Scottish tourism, what with the Commonwealth Games descending on Glasgow in July and August and the Ryder Cup taking place in Perthshire in September. In fact, if you tally up the ‘Homecoming’ events being organised in every corner of Scotland this year, designed to lure as many people as possible to cross the border and arrive on Scottish shores and runways from overseas, there really isn’t a dull day on the Scottish calendar.

For cyclists there’s the Tweedlove Bike Festival in the beautiful Tweed Valley in Peebles; for long-distance runners there’s the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon on September 28th. For something a little less strenuous and a lot more tasty the month of May is Whiskey Month - pace yourselves! - and all manner of food and drink festivals are planned across the nation throughout the year. So, if you are thinking of coming to Scotland this year, the pride of this already dignified nation will be notched up and the excitement will be palpable.

And there has never really been a better time for camping in Scotland with the offer to visitors being so vibrant. Whether you are looking for wilder campsites in Scotland separated from its renowned wilderness and freedom by little more than a layer of canvas, or all-singing-all-dancing Scottish holiday parks with luxurious facilities and laid on entertainment, the range of choice is looking extremely healthy.

To get a real flavour of Scotland, you may want to time your visit with one of the many food and drink festivals and shows celebrating the locally produced delicacies that Scotland is world-famous for. Of course, the King of Scottish agricultural shows takes place in the Highlands and these Campsites near the Royal Highland Show are great bases to kick-start your holiday camping in Scotland. See, hear and feel the palpable pride of the Highlands in this eclectic mix of countryside tradition and modern extravaganza.

The camping Scotland has to offer doesn’t get much more exciting than on one of its many beautiful islands, each one steeped in the juices of its own distinct culture and history and exhibiting some of Scotland’s most spectacular landscapes. These Skye Campsites offer fabulous bases from which to explore the astonishing diversity of the Isle of Skye, from its white coral beaches to plummeting seas cliffs and mountain ridges. This mystical island and the thriving sea surrounding it is rich with wildlife, mesmerising its delighted visitors. You may even be lucky enough to witness the Northern Lights setting the skies ablaze above your tent or motorhome.

If it’s the beauty and tranquillity of a Scottish Loch you are dreaming of, then Camping near Scottish Lochs provides great walking, fishing, cycling and watersports, monster-hunting (of course) and wonderful opportunities for photography – funnily enough, bygone populations found these stretches of water beguiling too and built all manner of majestic castles on their banks. Both Aviemore and Fort William are excellent bases for loch-exploration each situated nearby a number of the most famous lochs in Scotland. Further south Loch Tay, magnificent against the backdrop of the Lawers mountain range beyond, has its own marina and a number of excellent camping and glamping options for picturesque, romantic stays.

For the chance to explore a true wilderness, thankfully protected from development, choose the campsites Scotland has to offer in the Cairngorms National Park. An adventurer’s playground, there are all manner of high-octane methods of getting to know this national park, either climbing to its highest points or plummeting downs its waterfalls and rivers. But you don’t have to be a triathlete to find fulfilment in the Cairngorms. Cairngorms’ castles, distilleries and the abundant wildlife draw all manner of visitors; touring and camping is a fabulous way to get under the skin of the place.

And, if we haven’t covered a region of Scotland here that you want to visit with your tent, motorhome or caravan, simply do a search from our Find a Campsite page. Whether you are looking for dog-friendly campsites, campsites with disabled facilities or naturist brrrr campsites in Scotland, you can use our facilities search and ‘refine search’ buttons to find your perfect pitch.
