Campsites near Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor

You'll know that Somerset camping offers beaches, sand and sun but it can also offer access to the hills of Exmoor and its wild expanses of beautiful heather and gorse clad moorland, running down to the coast. Dunkery Beacon on Dunkery Hill is the highest point on Exmoor, the second highest point in Southern England and as such a fantastic spot from which to take in the true majesty of this region of the UK. At 584 metres above sea-level Dunkery Hill is classed as a 'Marilyn' and on a clear day the views will make you 'oooh', 'ahhh' and (if I was anything to go by) squeal. Views across Devon to Dartmoor in one direction and the panorama of the South Wales coast in the other. Blue sky, turquoise sea and rich moorland heathers, like an artist's pallette. This is probably one of the most scenic spots in the country and a memorable pinnacle to your UK camping trip.

Blanketted in deep purple heather during the summer months, and home to a range of wild-life inlcuding red deer and wild Exmoor ponies, Exmoor walks in this area are rewarding. The beacon itself and surrounding mounds have been designated as an Ancient Monument, with several Bronze Age mounds at or near the summit.
