Campsites near Gowbarrow Fell, Lake District

At a height of 481 metres, Gowbarrow Fell near Ullswater Lake is classed as a Wainwright and provides ramblers with some spectacular views over the Lake District across to the Helvellyn range. Surprisingly, Gowbarrow Fell and the surrounding hills of Little Mell Fell and Great Mell Fell aren't well known among walkers and climbers who want to 'knock hills off' their lists. Well, that's good then, because it means that you will be able to have those views all to yourself! This area being one of the most popular destinations for UK camping holidays, it is always refreshing to find a spot that feels peaceful, private and truly wild.

At one time this fell was part of a medieval hunting park, Gowbarrow Park, but it is now managed by the National Trust. The top of the fell is a broad plateau with a number of small rocky knolls among areas of heather and bog. On your way up or down you might like to visit Aira Force, a popular waterfall on the Aira Beck.
