Just the name Snowdon Mountain Railway sounds exciting and this fabulous 4.25 mile line running from Llanberis, one of Snowdonia's most picturesque and best-loved villages, to the summit of beautiful Snowdon itself doesn't disappoint. Want to ride a train to the top of the world? Well, hop aboard one of the steam or diesel locomotives carrying excited passengers up Snowdon and you will certainly feel like you can reach and touch the sky. At the summit you can alight the train for half an hour and, as well as gawp and wonder at the scenery below and the cloud formations laid out at your feet like plumptious duvets, you can also visit the Snowdon Summit Visitor Centre. On a clear day you'll be able to see Ireland, across England, Scotland and the Isle of Man! So, with euphoria within reach, why not stay at one of these campsites near Snowdon Mountain Railway, providing great access to this rather unusual steam train ride.
The gradients on this track are unsurprisingly fairly extreme, with gradients of up to 1:5 along the route. Engines and lines mesh together with teeth, a system developed in Switzerland. Trains to the summit are only one carriage long and are pushed by the locomotive; with a laid-back speed of just 5mph, there's plenty of time to take in the sights. In fact the round trip, including the half hour stop at the summit, lasts 2.5 hours: a truly unforgettable centrepiece activity for your camping or touring holiday.
