Camping in West Wales

The beautiful area of West Wales offers amateur astronomers many wonderful opportunities for star-gazing and, rather than having to climb a mountain or find a break in the forest canopy to do so, camping in West Wales tends to be fairly close to the coast, so you can star gaze with one eye on the sky and the other looking over the ocean stretching out before you...we love it when we can use that word, 'perfect'! The camping and caravanning sites listed here are all within easy reach of spots in West Wales that have been recognised for their star-gazing potential, so check the lunar calendar (avoiding a full moon if possible, of course), pack your bins and star charts and get packed up for a trip camping under the stars.

Visit the National Trust's Stackpole, near Bosherton which has been recognised as a Dark Sky Discovery spot. There are eight miles of coastline to explore along this former grand estate. Head to Stackpole Quay, and then a short walk along the cliff path (torches are advisable!) to do some serious star-spotting in one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in the world. Alternatively, head to the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Llanarthne, Carmarthershire, an area which has been internationally recognised for its high quality of dark skies. Or, ideal for families wanting to star-gaze together, without the concern of teetering on a cliff in the dark for hours, head to Penbryn Beach in Cardigan Bay. Penbryn can be reached via a short walk through the woods of a fern-clad valley, managed by the National Trust. Camping West Wales really is a great option for those wanting to combine fun and relaxation by day with a splash of magic at night.

Top tips for star-gazing include, of course, some creature comforts. To see the stars you need to keep rather still and, even on a balmy summer night (oh, how we love those!) you can get a tad chilly if you don't wrap up warm. Binoculars are useful, of course, and if you are a cataloguing-type, then a star gazing map or chart might also come in handy. Personally, I'd put a flask of hot chocolate and some chocky digestives up there in the essentials list too...

Of course, you don't have to sleep in a tent to enjoy a spot of star-gazing. If you'd prefer tin walls rather than canvas ones, there are a number of West Wales caravans sites in the vicinity of these fabulous star-gazing spots which would enable you to make an evening or night foray into the darkness for a spot of galactical enrichment, before heading back to your caravan and a comfy mattress!
