Thetford Forest straddles the North of Suffolk and the south of Norfolk and is the largest lowland pine forest in Britain, planted after the first world war to replenish the country's timber reserves after so much of our indiginous trees had been used to feed the war's demands. Within Thetford Forest lies Breckland Forest which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with a high level of biodiversity; although the forest has only been in existence for a century it is not uncommon to see hares and game-birds; roe deer, red deer and Muntjac roam freely and bird-watchers enjoy the presence of scarce bird species like Woodlark, Nightjar and Goshawk. Several marked trails are suitable for family bike riding but there are also more challenging routes for experienced riders - the section known as The Beast is legendary...quake . If you want to balance on high wires, fling yourself off ledges on bungees and generally loosen your stomach, then try Go-Ape in the forest and plenty of other 'adventure play' for young and old.
