Sedlescombe really is rather special in the world of wine production and UK vineyards, it being the first organic vineyard in the UK and also home to the first biodynamic vineyard. Excuse me? Well, a biodynamic vineyard is one underpinned not only by the principles of organic production but also by those laid down by Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s, using lunar and cosmic rhythms in the timing of the special preparations used at the vineyard designed to benefit both the vines that grow and the soil from which they draw sustainance. So, Sedlescombe Vineyard isn't just organic, it is dynamically so. Those interested in alternative and traditional agricultural techniques will be fascinated by the methods being employed to good effect here.
Of course, it's not all just about the methods... the resulting wines are rather good too! Sedlescombe produces a range of still white, red, rose and sparkling wines, fruit wines, as well as some popular liqueurs and ciders. Wine tasting experiences are popular at Sedlescombe, with tours of the 22 acres of organically certified vineyards also attracting thousands of visitors. While you are there, enjoying the woodland walks alongside your exploratoin of the vines, you can always indulge in a cream tea or ploughman's lunch... or upgrade again to a spread of smoked salmon, caviar and quails eggs all washed down with a glass of pink fizz. (I know which option I'm going for!) The vineyard is open from 10:30am-5:30pm every day. Telephone (01580) 830715 for details of the tours or to book food. Postcode: TN32 5SA.
