Campsites near Lake District Climbing

The Lakes of Cumbria provide fabulous access to a full range of climbing experiences suitable for beginners to advanced sports climbers and here you will find listed a range of campsites near some of the best loved Lake District Climbing sites across the region. This being the 'home' of climbing - having been accredited (by the Brits, anyway!) with the title, 'Birth Place of Climbing', when in the last quarter of the nineteenth century rock climbing evolved into a sport rather than simply a necessity for survival, climbers flock here from across the planet - the atmosphere is just a little bit exciting! Those looking for UK campsites in the thick of the action, will find on these pages some ideal spots for resting tired but satisfied heads after an exciting day.

Of course, the Lakes having England's highest concentration of mountains and fells helps, providing a multitude of climable crags - don't worry, there are plenty to go around! Here you will find a pleasing range of climbing vistas and conditions, from sheltered valley crags to more exposed mountain crags with rather lofty views.

Key hotspots include, of course, Borrowdale where you can indulge in some sunny, scenic bouldering at Gillercombe Boulders or Gillercombe itself nearby, where there are a further 30 or so climbs up the large broken mountain crag. Best known here is Gillercombe Buttress offering up to 140 metres of climbing. In Borrowdale, many climbers head for The Napes, celebrated as the birthplace of British rock climbing. The Napes, with its famous Napes Needle pinnacle and Eagles Nest, provides a truly diverse set of climbs, ideal to keep everyone in a climbing party happy, should you be venturing out with a mixed climbing group. A sunny and scenic spot, with views across to the Scafell range from the pinnacle and ridges.

In the beautiful Langdale Valleys there are some great opportunities for bouldering and for easier multi-pitch climbs (climbs that are longer than one rope's length). Langdale Boulders offer over 50 climbs, ideal for a couple of days bouldering on rough rock with generally good landings. Chapel Stile boulders offers some excellent bouldering on a number of small crags along pathways across a fellside - a very pleasant day out can be had here. If you are looking for a location with a good selection of middle grade, single pitch climbs then Raven Crag is a great spot with 30 routes, mainly 20-25 metres height.

In Wasdale, climbers often head for Overbeck where there are some good 50m pitches including Overbeck Buttress, Femme Fatale and Zig Zag. Bouldering on the Overbeck Boulder is also popular. If you want a smaller, scenic site, head for Middlefell overlooking Wast Water, offering some scenic climbs and scrambles on good clean rock. For longer routes on a high mountain Crag, head for Scafell Crag, with over 100 routes of up to 120m, including Botterills Slab, Moss Ledge Direct and Woodheads Climb.
