Northumberland Climbing

With hundreds of classic crags, it's a wonder that Northumberland isn't inundated with climbers looking for some exercise with a view! Fortunately, there's plenty of space and ascents to go around and, although some of the most popular crags can get really busy at peak times, there are plenty of locations for Northumberland climbing where you won't be fighting for elbow room. The National Park with its beautiful moorland offers a fantastic backdrop to days out climbing, with views out to the coastline from some of the region's hotspots. There are abundant opportunities for single pitch climbs, ranging from low grade to highly technical and bouldering is increasingly popular in this area too. Those looking for camping sites near Northumberland's climbing vital statistics should find a campsite to suit their needs on these pages.

If you are looking for a climbing-camping holiday, Northumberland is a great venue, with plenty of scope for a fortnight's camping spending a couple of nights in different locations across the region. Hotspots for a variety of different climbs exist in the Cheviot Hills (Henhole Craggs and Bizzle Craggs both offer multiple climbs) where you can enjoy some of the UKs most remote and quiet climbs; the area around Rothbury (Ravensheugh Crag, Lower Tosson and the many crags and Faces at Simonside); and the area inland from Alnwick (Edlingham, Redheugh, Widehope and Oxen Wood Boulders are all popular with climbers and Bouldering fans alike, with easy access from the B6341).
