Campsites near Ffestiniog Railway

Running 13.5 miles from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog, this is part of the original railway transporting slate from the nearby mines to Port Madoc. Horses were replaced by steam locomotives in 1863 and a year later the Ffestiniog Railway became the first narrow gauge railway allowed to carry passengers. Now a popular tourist attraction and one of the best-loved heritage tracks in the UK, you'll find a unique kind of locomotive engine running at this Porthmadog railway. Known as the 'Fairlie engines' after their designer Robert Fairlie, these locomotives have two boilers with a cab in between and kick out twice the driving force of your usual engine.

So, with a view to helping you plan your visit to this beautiful area of Wales, we have created this listing of Porthmadog camping sites, touring grounds and holiday parks, all with great access to the Festiniog Railway. Take a nostalgic trip through Snowdon National Park, with stunning views from the carriage windows of picturesque water ways, reservoirs and mountains; whoosh beneath snow-capped peaks, along wooded river banks and through hillside cuttings.

These campsites near Ffestiniog Railway will provide you with excellent access to the stations along this route. At Porthmadog Station you'll find refreshments, a bar and a gift and souvenir shop. At Tan-y-Bwylych Station you could stop for a picnic using one of the picnic tables and watch your kids enjoying the play area provided. At Blaenau Festiniog Station there's another gift and souvenir shop, so no need to go home empty handed!
