BackBack to Camping near UK Scuba Diving

St Abbs, Scotland

You may well have walked along the coastline of Berwickshire commenting on the beauty and mavelling at the scenery without giving much thought to what lies beneath the waves. The cliffs which tower over the beaches are also impressive beneath the waves, extending up to 30 metres below the surface and making some of the best diving topography in the UK. Forming dramatic shelves, walls and drop offs, the rocks of St Abbs Head form a major obstruction to the tidal flow of the North Sea, carving gullies, archways, tunnels and caves, forming an underwater cathedral to which worshipping Scuba Divers have gravitated for decades. There is even a dive just off St Abbs Harbour wall known as Cathedral Rock - amazing diving is available at a fin's reach of the shore. Visit once and divers return. The diving in this area is stunning and the visibility is good to great: 10-12 metres regularly with the holy grail of 20 metres at key points during the diving calendar.

The marine species in the Eyemouth Marine Reserve are diverse, due to the relative contrast in both cold and warmer waters meeting at this point along the coast. Wolfish, for instance, are usually arctic creatures but are often found by divers off the Berwickshire coast. What will you see? Kelp beds disguising Ballan Wrasse; rocks covered in anemones and red sea squirts; masses of sea urchin prowling on the rocks; lesser octopus and angler fish hunting in the depths; at at greater depths gardens of orange and stark white soft corals. The best of diving holidays in the UK: You won't be disappointed.

Shore diving at St Abbs is easy - there are good dives around the Harbour and at other points along the coast to Eyemouth. And there are dozens of great local boat dives too for all abilities - shall boat dives ranging from 5-10 metres and more challenging deeper dives further off the coast like the Glanmire Wreck dive at a depth of around 30m. The Horn (15-30m) lying directly out east from St Abbs Harbour is a submarine reef containing huge numbers of common long armed squat lobster. Floatcarr Reef (or Anemone Gully) as it is otherwise known) (12-25m) is home to octopus, wolfish, this dive is over-flowing with life.

Here you will find campsites near Eyemouth and St Abbs closeby the dive sites and local dive centres.
