Stanage Edge is the largest of the gritstone edges that look down over the Hope Valley village of Hathersage and is an ever-popular location year round for climbing and abseiling, offering as it does some challenging rock climbing routes. Stanage is known as the 'Queen of Grit' and is considered by many as the 'Best crag in England'. It might well be time for you to make your pilgrimage! There are thousands of possible climbs at Stanage, for all styles and abilities, with many strong features in the rock formations providing the lead for the ascents. Those interested in bouldering should head for the Southern Section of the gritstone edge. The Popular End, well named for the sheer concentration of climbing is yields, offers a kilometer of choice and variety.

Windgather Rocks a a great beginner-friednly crag offering over 100 climbing routes to its visitors. If you are trying to organise a group climbing trip, this might well be youre spot, as there's plenty of space on some easy climbs of around 9m with some great spots for a picnic to re-fuel during the day. Try your hand at High Buttress Arete, Missippi Crack or Portfolio.

The Roaches, another of the Peak District's famous natural gritstone crags, rises to 505m and has something for everybody, with moderate to difficult level climbs available. It's not the quietest of spots, mind you, as climbers flock to the rocks to try their hand at the classic climbs that have been developed here. However, the buzz and atmosphere is all part of the joy, so if you do end up queuing for your climb, you'll enjoy lapping up the energy and camaraderie. Most well known of the climbs at The Roaches are Hen Cloud, Ramshaw Rocks, The Sloth and Valkyrie.

Stoney Middleton is the name given to a series of impressive limestone buttresses which offers hundreds of different routes, great for rock climbing real and bouldering alike. If you don't want to hike far from your car, this is a great crag, the A623 road running close by. This is a sheltered crag, south facing so that it is quick to dry after a spot of rain.

Bleaklow is the lesser-known sister of Kinder, an adjoining gritstone plateau with a series of pronounced edges around its circumference. Good for bouldering are the collection of boulders known as Grinah and Barrow Stones whoch are sheltered and up to 8m.
